Are you interested in the hard-to-find amphibians and reptiles in our area? Follow Travis Russell, Blair County Coordinator for Pennsylvania Amphibian and Reptile Survey (PARS) to one of our local state game lands as he leads you to this “herp hot spot” at night to find a variety of salamanders, frogs, egg masses, and more! On this trip our work of flipping over logs and rocks and wading in the vernal pool may allow us to find some of the rarer species that have been found at this site in the past such as the Jefferson, four-toed, and valley and ridge salamanders. Of course, you should be able to enjoy a little night music from the chorus of wood frogs and sparing peepers that live in this area, too! The data that the group collects will be used in the PARS to help in determining the distribution and status of all amphibians and reptiles throughout Pennsylvania. In terms of gear, it will be important to bring head lamps, cameras, extra batteries, waterproof boots, waterproof pants, warm clothing for changes in temperature, any sort of dip nets, and some sort of tick spray. For those of you who would like to bring waders, feel free! Meet at Walmart in Huntingdon at 7pm to begin the evening’s event. Contact Kristin Joivell, (814) 386-6267 if you have any questions.
